Configuring Modelling Rules

Modelling rules are the rules that must be followed when using private models within an OU, determining the asset types, scope of effectiveness, creation methods, and more of the private models. By assigning modelling rules to onboarding templates, private models can be created and used to onboard assets based on the current OU’s modelling rules in Onboarding Tool. For more information on how to use private models to onboard assets in Onboarding Tool, see Using Private Models to Onboard Assets.

Prerequisites

Ensure that the required business objects have been created at the global level. For more information, see Configuring Global Business Objects.

Procedure

  1. Select Global Business Rules > Modelling Rules from the left navigation pane.

  2. Select New Rule.

  3. In the pop-up window, enter the basic information for the modelling rule:

    • Rule name: the name of the modelling rule.

    • Identifier: the unique identifier for the modelling rule.

    • Type: the type of asset the private model applies to, such as sites, devices, components, or custom types.

    • Public Model: displays the public models associated with the current business object type.

    • Modelling level: specifies where the private model is effective, either within the OU or within the site, or selects Do Not Create Private Models.

      • By OU: after associating a private model with the selected asset type/vendor model in the Business Objects menu of the OU, the private model will be used when accessing assets of that type or model within the current OU.

      • By Site: after associating a private model with the selected asset type/vendor model in the Business Objects menu of the OU and specifying the site type, the private model will be used when accessing the devices/components/custom types of that type/model within the specified site. Other types of assets or the same type of assets in other sites still use the public model.

      • Do Not Create Private Models: only public models or public sub-models are available to access assets of this type within the current OU.

    • Creation method: when selecting Device/Component Type, choose Based on Model to create a private model based on the model. In the Business Objects menu of the OU, you can associate a private model with the vendor model that is associated with the same public model as the specified device/component type. After association, the private model will be used to access the devices/components of that model in Onboarding Tool.

    • Description: the description of the modelling rule.

  4. Select Save.

Results

After the modelling rule is created, you can perform the following operations:

  • Edit the modelling rule: select Edit edit corresponding to the modelling rule and edit the name and description of the rule.

  • Delete the modelling rule: select Delete delete corresponding to the modelling rule and delete the rule.

Once the modelling rule is assigned to an onboarding template, editing or deleting the rule in Global Business Rules > Modelling Rules will take effect directly within the OU, without the need to update the onboarding template.
