Pareto Chart

A Pareto chart arranges states as bars ordered by duration from longest to shortest and overlays a cumulative percentage line on the same chart, presenting the 80/20 pattern where a few states account for most of the time. It suits analyzing equipment downtime causes and the distribution of state durations.

Pareto

This topic describes the configuration items specific to the Pareto chart. For the items common to all charts, such as the Basic tab and the Filter tab, see Common Configurations for Charts.

Data of Pareto Chart

The Pareto chart takes a time field and a state field as a pair of inputs: the time field is used to calculate how long each state lasted, and the state field classifies the records. The X-axis shows the states, the Y-axis their total duration, and the secondary Y-axis the cumulative percentage.

For general information about data sources and data fields, see Common Configurations for Charts > Configuring Data.

Dimension

Dimension plays the role of the time field in a Pareto chart, and the data field is labeled Time. Exactly 1 field is required. The difference between adjacent records is used to calculate the duration of a state, so the field should be of a time type.

Note

The Pareto chart does not use time as the X-axis categories. The time field only takes part in calculating how long a state lasted; the X-axis shows the total duration of each state.

Measurement

Measurement plays the role of the state field in a Pareto chart, and the data field is labeled State. Exactly 1 field is required. After sorting by time, adjacent records with the same state value are merged into one span, and the total of all spans of a state gives the height of its bar.

Data Arrangement Rules

The arrangement and calculation of a Pareto chart are handled by the system automatically and provide no configuration items:

  • Sorting: Bars are ordered by total duration from longest to shortest automatically. The sort index in State Enum does not affect the bar order.

  • Cumulative percentage: Durations are accumulated in the sorted order and divided by the total duration to give the cumulative percentage, which is the value of the line (0 to 100).

  • States included: Only states whose identifier is defined in State Enum are shown; a state with a total duration of 0 is not shown.

  • The Pareto chart provides no 80% reference line and does not merge long-tail states into an “Others” category.

Note

Aggregation on the Data tab must stay No. With Yes selected, the system applies Sum aggregation to the State field automatically, and since state values are strings, the sum is 0, no state matches a state identifier in State Enum, and the chart draws no blocks at all.

Style of Pareto Chart

The Style tab is grouped into basic configuration, chart style, coordinate axis, and others. For common styles such as the title, widget padding, and background, see Common Configurations for Charts > Configuring Style.

Data Processing

Data Processing limits the statistical time window and contains Window Start Time, Window End Time, Parameter Name, and Offset Seconds. This section is identical to the timeline widget; for a description of each item, see Timeline > Data Processing.

When no Window End Time is set, the system uses the largest time in the data plus one Time Granularity as the end of the window, so that the last span is not zero.

General

State Enum defines the states included in the statistics and their colors. This section is identical to the timeline widget; for a description of each item, see Timeline > State Enum.

In a Pareto chart, the sort index of an enum item has no effect; bars are always ordered by total duration in descending order.

Measure Style

  • Measure Style controls the appearance of the bar series, which represents state duration.

  • Legend Display Name: Sets the name of the bar series shown in the legend and the tooltip. Duration by default.

  • Bar Width: Sets the width of each bar, from 4 to 120 px, with a default of 24 px.

  • Bar Spacing: Controls the gap between adjacent bars as a percentage, from 0 to 100%, with a default of 30%.

  • Decimal Places: Sets the precision of the bar value in the tooltip, with a default of 2. See Common Configurations for Charts > Label Field Type Configuration Items.

Note

Bar colors come from the colors of the enum items in State Enum; Measure Style provides no unified color item.

Line Style

  • Line Style controls the appearance of the cumulative percentage line.

  • Legend Display Name: Sets the name of the line series shown in the legend and the tooltip. Cumulative % by default.

  • Color: Sets the line color. Solid colors only, #FFA940 by default.

  • Line Type: Sets the line type and Line Width (1 to 12 px, 2 px by default), and Smooth can be selected to draw the line as a smooth curve.

  • Dot: Sets the Shape of the line data points (Square, Dot, Circle, Rounded Square, Triangle, Diamond, Bubble, or Arrow, with Dot as the default) and their Size (0 to 24 px, 6 px by default).

  • Show Percentage Label: Selected by default, labeling the cumulative percentage beside each data point. When cleared, only the line remains.

  • Decimal Places: Sets the precision of the cumulative percentage value, with a default of 2.

Coordinate Axis

The Display X-Axis, Display Y-Axis, and Display Secondary Y-Axis check boxes at the top of the section are all selected by default and control the visibility of each axis. Clearing one hides the style section of that axis.

For the Name, Name Axis Margin, Unit Font, Tilt Angle, Label Font, Label Axis Margin, Coordinate Axis, and Grid Line items shared by the three axes, see Common Configurations for Charts > Common Axis Configuration Items. Only the differences per axis are described below.

X Axis Style

The X-axis is a category axis showing the state names. It provides no label settings, dynamic unit, or axis range; label tilting is set separately with Tilt Angle.

Y Axis Style

The Y-axis is a value axis showing the total duration of each state. In addition to the common items, it provides:

  • Dynamic Unit: Selected by default, letting the system pick the unit from the magnitude of the data, in which case the Name box cannot be edited. Once a measurement field is bound, the system fills the axis name with the unit or the field name of that field automatically.

  • Label Settings: Sets the Type of the Y-axis tick labels, either Value or Time (the Pareto chart does not offer Category), with Time as the default. Format (auto, none, k, m, g) and Auto-Trim Trailing Zeros are shown only with Value selected; Time Granularity is shown only with Time selected.

  • Time Granularity: Sets the conversion unit of the duration. Options are Second, Minute, Hour, Day, Week, Month, and Year, with Hour as the default. This granularity also determines the compensation applied to the end of the window when no window end time is set.

  • Decimal Places: Sets the precision of the Y-axis tick labels, with a default of 2.

  • Y-axis starts at zero: When selected, the Y-axis starts at 0 rather than scaling to the data range, which makes charts easier to compare. Cleared by default.

Secondary Y Axis Style

The secondary Y-axis sits on the right of the chart and shows the cumulative percentage. Its Name defaults to Cumulative %, and its axis line uses the same #FFA940 as the line by default.

  • Decimal Places: Sets the precision of the secondary Y-axis tick labels, with a default of 2.

Note

The range of the secondary Y-axis is fixed at 0 to 100, does not change with the data, and cannot be modified by configuration.

Legend

The legend shows the names of the bar series and the line series, taken from the Legend Display Name of the two sections. Position, Legend Margin, Legend Name-Value Middle Spacing, Size, and Legend Font match the horizontal bar chart. See Horizontal Bar Chart > Legend.

Interactions at Runtime

The widget provides the following behaviors at runtime, with no configuration needed:

  • Tooltip: Hovering the mouse over a state shows the state name, the bar series name with its total duration, and the line series name with its cumulative percentage, in that order.

  • Legend filtering: Selecting a legend item hides or shows the corresponding series temporarily.

  • Preview while editing: Before real data is retrieved in the editor, the chart renders with 24 hours of sample data so that the style can be previewed.

  • Empty state: When no time field or state field is configured, “Configure time field and state field” is shown; when they are configured but there is no data, an empty-data message is shown.
